November 2014 - Emancipation Day Observation
November 1, 2014, was the 150th anniversary of Maryland Emancipation Day. On November 1, 1864, a new Maryland State Constitution freed all enslaved persons living in Maryland. Jerusalem-Mt. Pleasant UMC participated in the Emancipation Day observation at the Beall-Dawson House in Rockville, MD. Three of our church members, Warren Crutchfield, Sharyn Duffin and Irene Snowden, who are descendents of African Americans who lived in Montgomery County told stories about their ancestors. In addition, JMP had a information table with information regarding the history of the Church and had copies of the Community Cornerstones DVD which is about historical African American churches in Montgomery County for sale. JMP also provided food for purchase by attendees at the event.
